Russian drones strike a strategic Ukrainian port and civilian ships

Russian drone attacks targeted the port of Izmail in southern Ukraine, damaging key infrastructure and several civilian vessels, Ukrainian officials said.

Located in the Odessa region on the Danube River near Romania, the port of Izmail has become a crucial logistics hub for Ukrainian exports since the beginning of the war. It is regularly targeted by Russian forces.

According to Ukrainian Deputy Prime Minister Oleksiy Kuleba, one of the strikes hit a Panamanian-flagged vessel and port facilities. A separate attack also targeted a civilian ship, flying the Liberian flag and transporting corn.

Ukrainian authorities denounce the attacks as "deliberate" and targeting critical infrastructure and logistical routes in the country. Despite the damage, they maintain that port operations remain generally stable.

In the surrounding areas, the bombings caused fires, destroyed an auto repair shop, and damaged several vehicles and private buildings. One person was hospitalized as a result of the attacks.

The Ukrainian Air Force reported that Russia had launched several missiles and over a hundred drones since the previous evening. The majority were reportedly intercepted or neutralized by air defenses.

These new strikes are part of Russia’s strategy to disrupt Ukrainian exports, which are essential to the country’s economy and the global supply of grain.
