Massive cyberattack: Russian-linked hackers infiltrate the email accounts of Ukrainian prosecutors

Russian-linked hackers compromised the email accounts of numerous prosecutors and investigators in Ukraine, revealing a vast digital espionage operation, according to newly reviewed data. This campaign highlights the extent of the efforts to monitor anti-corruption officials and suspected collaborators with Moscow.

In total, more than 170 accounts belonging to Ukrainian prosecutors are believed to have been hacked in recent months. The analyzed data shows that at least 284 inboxes were compromised between September 2024 and March 2026, including sensitive communications and logs detailing the hacking operations.

This information was discovered after an accidental leak on the internet by the hackers themselves. It was subsequently identified and analyzed by the Ctrl-Alt-Intel cybersecurity research collective, composed of British and American experts specializing in cyber threats. According to these researchers, this campaign represents only a fraction of the digital espionage activities carried out by Moscow.

While the majority of targets are located in Ukraine, the operation also extends to other European countries, including Romania, Greece, Bulgaria, and Serbia. Military and government accounts in these states have also reportedly been targeted, illustrating the regional scope of this campaign.

Researchers believe these attacks are part of a broader strategy to gather intelligence on judicial institutions and state structures, particularly in countries facing Russian influence. Access to investigators' emails could provide valuable information about ongoing investigations and targeted networks.

This revelation underscores once again the growing importance of cybersecurity in contemporary conflicts. As the war between Russia and Ukraine continues, the confrontations are no longer confined to the military front, but also extend to cyberspace, which has become a major strategic domain.
