Cuba: Democratic lawmakers urge Trump to ease tensions after a visit to the island

Two Democratic members of the US House of Representatives traveled to Cuba last week, calling the president Donald Trump to "moderate its rhetoric" towards the island, in a context of strong diplomatic tensions between Washington and Havana.

This visit, led in particular by Pramila Jayapal, a prominent figure in the progressive wing of the Democratic Party, is the first delegation of its kind to visit Cuba this year. It comes after the Trump administration imposed a de facto oil blockade aimed at increasing pressure on the Cuban communist government.

The elected officials expressed their concerns about the escalating economic measures and their consequences for the Cuban population. They advocated for a more measured approach, arguing that a harsher stance and increased sanctions risked worsening the situation without fostering a diplomatic solution.

This initiative is part of a broader debate within the American political class regarding the strategy to adopt toward Cuba. Democrats critical of the administration's hard line are calling for prioritizing dialogue and avoiding further deterioration of bilateral relations.

The visit of this delegation illustrates the persistent divisions in Washington over foreign policy towards the island, as tensions remain high and prospects for appeasement remain uncertain.
