Cuba on Tuesday accused the United States of pressuring several UN member states to postpone a debate scheduled for July 7 on the US embargo against the island. Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez asserted that Washington is attempting to influence certain countries to delay the discussion.

At a press conference in Havana, Bruno Rodríguez stated that the discussions initiated this year between Cuba and the United States had not yielded any concrete progress. According to him, diplomatic contacts are continuing in an atmosphere marked by threats, sanctions, and statements he considers hostile to Cuban sovereignty.

The Cuban foreign minister also stated that the US embargo is significantly worsening the country's economic crisis. He emphasized that the sanctions are contributing to shortages of food, fuel, medicine, and electricity, while directly impacting the living conditions of the population.

The debate planned at the United Nations will precede the General Assembly's annual vote calling on the United States to lift its trade embargo against Cuba. For more than thirty years, this resolution has been adopted by a very large majority, even though it is not legally binding.

At the time of the Cuban authorities' statements, the United States had not yet responded to these accusations. Relations between Washington and Havana remain strained, while the prospects for easing sanctions remain highly uncertain.
