Growth falters: the Kremlin tries to reassure after the downgrade of Russian economic forecasts

The Kremlin on Tuesday sought to downplay the impact of the Russian government's revised economic forecasts, as the country's growth slows amid strong international uncertainty.

Russian authorities have lowered their GDP growth forecasts for 2026 and 2027, citing global economic volatility and persistent geopolitical challenges. Despite this revision, the Kremlin maintains that the country's macroeconomic situation remains stable.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov dismissed any prospect of immediate government change, insisting that Russia's economic fundamentals remain solid despite a slowdown in activity.

Since the start of the war in Ukraine and the massive Western sanctions imposed on Moscow, the Russian economy has been operating in a particularly tense environment. While some sectors linked to the military industry have continued to support activity, other areas are suffering from a lack of investment, persistent inflation, and limited access to international markets.

According to several analysts, these more cautious forecasts could also reflect the Russian government's desire to contain public spending in an increasingly constrained budgetary environment. The costs associated with the conflict in Ukraine and social programs are weighing heavily on state finances.

Despite reassuring pronouncements from the government, some economists believe that Russia faces structurally weak growth. The country remains dependent on energy exports, while technological and trade restrictions imposed by Western countries continue to hamper several strategic sectors.

The Kremlin, however, seeks to project an image of economic stability in order to avoid further public concern, as the war in Ukraine and tensions with the West continue to weigh on the country's economic future.
