Egypt's Foreign Minister, Badr Abdelatty, has held a series of telephone conversations with several key players, including US envoy Steve Witkoff and his Iranian counterpart Abbas Araqchi, to discuss solutions to ease regional tensions.
These exchanges are taking place against a backdrop of sharp escalation between the United States, Israel and Iran, with increasing risks of the conflict spreading throughout the Middle East.
According to Cairo, the discussions focused on concrete proposals for de-escalation, particularly regarding maritime security and the reopening of the strategic Strait of Hormuz, a crucial point in global oil trade.
Egypt is thus asserting itself as an active diplomatic player, alongside Turkey and Pakistan, which are also trying to play a mediating role in the crisis.
Islamabad recently hosted a regional meeting dedicated to de-escalation, evidence of a growing mobilization of several powers to avoid a widespread conflagration.
In this tense context, diplomatic initiatives are multiplying to try to contain the conflict, while the risks to regional stability and global energy markets remain high.
