North Korea has announced new measures to bolster its nuclear capabilities and modernize its military, according to the official KCNA news agency. These decisions were made at a military meeting chaired by North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, amid ongoing tensions surrounding Pyongyang's military program.
At an expanded meeting of the Workers' Party's Central Military Commission on Thursday, North Korean officials adopted a plan to develop the country's nuclear forces "quantitatively and qualitatively." Kim Jong Un also called for further modernization of North Korea's military capabilities.
According to KCNA, the North Korean leader stated that national security and "true peace" could only be guaranteed by having a military strong enough to counter all threats. He emphasized the need to strengthen the country's military capabilities to maintain its deterrent capacity.
The meeting resulted in plans to renew technical infrastructure related to combat systems, develop nuclear forces, and modernize military bases. North Korean authorities also discussed increased standardization and specialization of military facilities.
Discussions also focused on strengthening the role of the Reconnaissance General Office, North Korea's military intelligence service. Pyongyang wants to improve its surveillance, intelligence gathering, and strategic analysis capabilities.
KCNA also reported that the meeting addressed the construction of new, modern naval bases and the upgrading of the country's shipyards. These announcements reflect Kim Jong Un's stated aim of developing all components of the North Korean armed forces.
