China: Senior Politburo official Ma Xingrui targeted by anti-corruption investigation

Chinese leader Ma Xingrui, a member of the Communist Party's Politburo, is under investigation for "serious violations of law and discipline," the country's anti-corruption agency announced.

A former aerospace engineer who rose to become one of China's most prominent political figures, Ma Xingrui also held key positions in rural policy. His investigation is being conducted by the Central Commission for Discipline Inspection, China's anti-corruption arm.

No details have been provided regarding the allegations against him. However, this procedure is part of the long-standing anti-corruption campaign waged by the Chinese government, which regularly targets high-ranking officials.

Ma Xingrui thus becomes the third current Politburo member to be targeted by an investigation in the last six months, a sign of tightening controls at the top of the state.

This case illustrates the Chinese authorities' desire to continue purges within the political elite, in a context where internal discipline of the Communist Party remains a strategic priority.

The opening of an investigation against an official of this level underlines the scale of the anti-corruption campaign and its impact on the highest spheres of power in China.
