The University of Cambridge has appointed Nazir Afzal, former chief attorney general for the North West of England , to lead the first phase of its inquiry into the death of Professor Jason Arday.
Jason Arday died on August 14 at his home in south London , nine days after resigning from his professorship at Cambridge. His resignation came amid allegations of plagiarism and inconsistencies in statements he had made about his career.
Nazir Afzal, whose career as a magistrate was notably distinguished in the prosecution of sex exploitation networks in the United Kingdom , will initially focus his work on the support provided to the researcher in the period immediately preceding his death.
The university did not specify the timetable for this first phase or the procedures for publishing its conclusions.
