Brazil: A mysterious alert sent to millions of phones triggers a hacking investigation

Brazilian authorities suspect a cyberattack was behind an unauthorized alert sent overnight Friday to Saturday to mobile phones in several regions of the country. The incident led the government to temporarily suspend its national emergency notification system.

According to a statement from the National Secretariat for Civil Protection and Defense, an unexpected message containing the word "misanthropy," which refers to hatred of humanity, was sent to users in several Brazilian states around 1:30 a.m.

Faced with this unusual situation, the authorities immediately deactivated the notification system to prevent any further unauthorized dissemination. The government believes that external interference may be responsible for sending the message.

Brazilian officials indicated that the alert appeared to have been triggered remotely, reinforcing suspicions of a cyberattack. An investigation has been launched to determine how the alleged perpetrators gained access to the system used for emergency communications to the public.

The case has been handed over to the federal police, who will be responsible for identifying those in charge and assessing the extent of the possible intrusion. Authorities have not yet specified how many people received the message or which regions were most affected.

The government has assured that the national notification system will be restored as soon as the necessary security checks have been completed. This incident highlights the growing challenges states face in protecting their critical digital infrastructure from cyber threats.
