Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and Senator Flávio Bolsonaro appear neck and neck ahead of a possible second round of the presidential election, according to a Datafolha poll.
According to this poll, Flávio Bolsonaro would receive 46% of the vote compared to 45% for Lula. However, this difference remains within the margin of error of two points, meaning that the two candidates are statistically tied.
This is the first time that the son of former president Jair Bolsonaro has overtaken Lula in this type of poll, although this progress remains fragile.
The incumbent president, who is seeking a fourth, non-consecutive term, has seen his lead erode in recent months. In March, he still held a slightly more pronounced advantage over his rival.
Flávio Bolsonaro's momentum can be explained in particular by the public support of his father, an influential figure on the Brazilian right, despite his legal troubles.
This close race reflects a persistent polarization of Brazilian society, foreshadowing an intense election campaign as the October vote approaches.
