Bangkok in shock – train driver charged after deadly collision

Thai authorities have charged a train driver with negligence after a violent collision in central Bangkok on Saturday that left eight dead and 32 injured.

The accident occurred when a freight train collided with a public bus that was stopped at a level crossing on the Asok-Din Daeng road. The impact caused a major fire that quickly engulfed the bus and damaged several nearby vehicles.

According to Urumporn Koondejsumrit, the evidence gathered by investigators clearly indicates reckless conduct on the part of the train driver, justifying his indictment for negligence resulting in death.

Police also announced that the bus driver could face charges. However, as he remains hospitalized following the accident, he has not yet been formally questioned and no charges have been filed against him.

Investigators are now considering the possibility of further charges in this case, while the exact circumstances of the collision continue to be analyzed.

Images broadcast by local media show burned-out vehicles and extensive damage at the accident site. Emergency services worked for several hours to extinguish the fire and evacuate victims.

This tragedy has reignited concerns about the safety of level crossings in Thailand, where several fatal train accidents have already been recorded in recent years in busy urban areas.
