Australia: Fugitive suspected of killing two police officers shot dead after a seven-month manhunt

Australian police believe they have shot dead a fugitive wanted for several months for the murder of two police officers, ending a massive search operation in the state of Victoria.

The man, identified as Desmond Freeman, was reportedly killed during a multi-hour standoff with law enforcement at a remote rural property in the northeastern part of the state.

According to authorities, the operation took place Monday morning after a siege lasting nearly three hours. The 56-year-old suspect had been actively sought for seven months for his alleged involvement in the deaths of two police officers.

Although formal identification is still underway, Victoria police say it is "very likely" Desmond Freeman, formerly known by another name.

Victoria's chief constable, Mike Bush, said initial evidence suggested the use of force was justified.

"He had the opportunity to surrender peacefully, which he did not do," he said, adding that no police officers were injured during the operation.

Authorities are continuing their investigation to determine the exact circumstances of the intervention, including to confirm whether the suspect was armed at the time of the incident.

This case, which has deeply affected public opinion in Australia, brings an end to a long manhunt and raises once again the question of police operations against suspects considered extremely dangerous.
