Le président américain Donald Trump made a strong impression at the G7 summit in Évian-les-Bains by declaring to other world leaders: "I'm the boss," a remark that illustrated the decisive weight of the United States in international discussions.
This statement came as G7 leaders adopted a stronger common position in support of Ukraine, with a renewed commitment to support Kyiv and consideration of new sanctions against Russia.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky had come to the summit with the objective of convincing Western leaders that the Ukrainian army had regained the initiative and that Russia could not impose the conditions of a future peace agreement alone.
According to Reuters, the discussions and the summit's final declaration suggest that Trump was more receptive to Ukraine's arguments than before. This shift contrasts with previous years, during which he was often more reserved regarding aid to Ukraine.
The G7 leaders also stressed the need to maintain pressure on Moscow in order to promote peace negotiations under conditions deemed acceptable to Kyiv.
Meanwhile, Trump reiterated that the interim agreement reached with Iran remained conditional. He warned that military operations could resume if Tehran did not comply with the commitments made in future negotiations.
The summit continued with discussions devoted to energy security, strategic supply chains and critical minerals, considered essential for Western economies and new technologies.
