Arrested in the United States, the former head of Brazilian intelligence caught up in a coup plot

Former Brazilian intelligence chief Alexandre Ramagem has been arrested by US immigration authorities after months on the run. He was wanted by Brazilian authorities following his conviction for involvement in a plot to overturn the results of the 2022 presidential election.

According to authorities, Alexandre Ramagem left Brazil last September to avoid a prison sentence of more than 16 years. He had been convicted of participating in an attempted coup aimed at contesting President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva's victory over former President Jair Bolsonaro.

A former federal police inspector, Ramagem headed the Brazilian intelligence agency during Jair Bolsonaro's presidency. He is accused of playing a key role in maneuvers aimed at weakening the electoral system and supporting illegal actions against democratic institutions.

His arrest was carried out by ICE, which confirmed his detention on U.S. soil. The precise circumstances of the arrest have not been detailed, but it occurs within the context of judicial cooperation between Washington and Brasilia.

This case is part of a series of investigations and prosecutions related to the post-election period of 2022 in Brazil, marked by strong political tensions and accusations of attempts at destabilization.

Alexandre Ramagem's legal future now depends on the decisions of the American authorities, particularly regarding a possible extradition to Brazil, where he would have to serve his sentence.
