After more than four years of war, Russia and Ukraine agree to a historic three-day ceasefire

Russia and Ukraine confirmed on Friday that they had accepted a temporary three-day ceasefire brokered by the United States, offering a rare glimmer of hope after more than four years of conflict.

The announcement was made by the American president. Donald Trumpwhich specified that the truce would be in effect from May 9 to 11. According to Washington, the agreement also provides for a massive exchange of prisoners of war, with 1,000 detainees to be returned by each side.

The ceasefire must include the cessation of all "kinetic activity," according to Donald Trump's terminology. Both Moscow and Kyiv have indicated their support for the American proposals, despite mutual accusations of violating previous truces in recent days.

This pause comes as Russia prepares to celebrate May 9, a highly symbolic date marking the 1945 Soviet victory over Nazi Germany in World War II. A major military parade is planned in Moscow.

Before the ceasefire was announced, fighting continued intensely. Satellite images showed smoke rising from an oil pumping station in Perm after a drone attack attributed to Ukraine.

The lack of diplomatic progress in the Russo-Ukrainian conflict was beginning to weigh heavily on the Trump presidency, already weakened by American involvement in the war against Iran alongside Israel.

Even though this truce is limited in time, it represents one of the most significant agreements reached since the beginning of the war. It now remains to be seen whether this ceasefire can actually be respected on the ground and pave the way for broader discussions between Moscow and Kyiv.
