United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres arrived in Syria on Saturday for an official visit, the first by a UN chief to the country since Ban Ki-moon's visit in 2009. Welcomed at Damascus airport by Syrian Foreign Minister Assad al-Shaybani, he intends to demonstrate the United Nations' support for the transitional period following the fall of Bashar al-Assad's regime at the end of 2024. This visit comes amid political and institutional reconstruction after more than thirteen years of conflict that have profoundly devastated the country. The United Nations hopes to support the new authorities in their efforts to restore stability and promote the return of institutions.
A message in favor of inclusive governance
Through his spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric, António Guterres emphasized that Syria now has a historic opportunity to overcome the consequences of the war and build a more stable, inclusive, and prosperous future for all its people. During his visit, the Secretary-General is scheduled to meet with President Ahmad al-Sharaa, as well as representatives of civil society, women's rights organizations, and various Syrian communities. The aim is to promote a national dialogue capable of strengthening the country's cohesion.
The international community remains mobilized
Since the change of power, the international community has regularly called on the new Syrian authorities to establish strong institutions that respect the rule of law and are representative of all segments of society. Through this visit, the United Nations reaffirms its commitment to supporting Syria's political transition, while encouraging the reforms necessary for national reconciliation, economic recovery, and the lasting return of stability to the country.
