A United Airlines plane struck a lamppost during its final descent to Newark Liberty International Airport in New Jersey on Sunday, causing property damage but no reported injuries. The incident involved Flight 169, which originated in Venice, Italy.
According to the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, the aircraft damaged a pole and a semi-trailer truck traveling on a nearby highway at the time of impact. The plane was continuing its landing approach when the accident occurred.
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) stated that the Boeing 767-400 struck a lamppost near the New Jersey Turnpike at approximately 2:00 PM local time. Despite the incident, the aircraft was able to land safely at Newark Airport.
Authorities did not immediately release information on the precise causes of the collision, nor on any potential operational consequences for air traffic at the airport, one of the busiest in the New York area.
The event highlights the risks associated with the proximity between certain road infrastructures and aircraft approach corridors in dense urban areas, where the margin for error is particularly small.
An investigation should be opened to determine the exact circumstances of the incident and to assess possible additional security measures to prevent such an event from recurring.
