Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced a strengthening of security cooperation with Turkey following a meeting with his counterpart Recep Tayyip Erdogan in Istanbul.
The two leaders agreed on "new measures" to deepen their cooperation in key security-related areas. Kyiv intends, in particular, to share its experience gained on the ground since the beginning of the war against Russia, in terms of technology and military expertise.
Volodymyr Zelensky stressed that this cooperation could benefit both countries, particularly in sectors where Ukraine has expertise developed through the conflict.
Discussions also focused on joint energy projects, particularly in the areas of gas infrastructure and the joint development of gas fields. This cooperation could strengthen economic ties between the two countries.
For his part, Recep Tayyip Erdogan reaffirmed Ankara's willingness to continue playing a mediating role in the conflict between Ukraine and Russia. Turkey had already hosted the first peace negotiations in 2022.
Ankara, a NATO member, maintains a balanced position between the two camps, seeking to preserve its relations with Moscow while supporting Kyiv.
Security in the Black Sea was also at the heart of the discussions, a major strategic issue for both countries in a context of persistent regional tensions.
This rapprochement illustrates Kyiv's desire to strengthen its alliances and capitalize on its military experience to exert more influence on the international stage.
