In Gaza, a humanitarian worker killed in an Israeli airstrike is greeted by a mourning crowd.

Hundreds of Palestinians paid tribute Thursday to Mohammad al-Waheidi, the local head of Egypt's main humanitarian organization in Gaza, who was killed this week in an Israeli airstrike. Highly regarded in the enclave, he had notably facilitated public screenings of the World Cup for residents.

According to Reuters, Mohammad al-Waheidi was killed Tuesday when an Israeli airstrike targeted the taxi he was traveling in in the Sabra neighborhood of Gaza. Three other people also died, including a brother and sister, aged 10 and 8, who were nearby, according to medics at the scene.

The funeral drew a large crowd, who came to pay tribute to the man who played a key role in the Egyptian organization's humanitarian operations and in organizing activities to provide moral support to the people of Gaza despite the destruction caused by the war.

The Israeli military did not immediately comment on the strike. The conflict, which began after Hamas's attack on Israel on October 7, 2023, continues to cause heavy civilian casualties and complicate the operations of humanitarian organizations in the Gaza Strip.
