In Barcelona, the global left is uniting to counter the rise of the far right.

Leaders of the international left are meeting in Barcelona for a series of gatherings aimed at strengthening cooperation and responding to the rise of the far right on the world political stage. The summit is being hosted by Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez and Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

Held over two days, these meetings bring together several leading figures from the progressive camp, including South African President Cyril Ramaphosa and Mexican leader Claudia Sheinbaum. Their stated objective is to defend multilateralism and coordinate a political response to developments in the international landscape.

This initiative comes in a context marked by geopolitical upheavals, particularly the decisions of the American president. Donald Trump in the areas of foreign policy, humanitarian aid, and engagement within NATO. These orientations have prompted many actors to rethink their alliances and strategies.

At the heart of this mobilization is the "Global Progressive Mobilization", launched after the gains of the far right in the 2024 European elections. The organizers intend to reach a joint declaration, focused on the defense of democracy, social justice and the ecological transition.

In parallel, a second event entitled "For the Defense of Democracy" is set to bring together political representatives and civil society actors. It follows on from a series of summits initiated by Lula and Sánchez in 2024 to structure international cooperation between progressive forces.

Through these meetings, left-wing leaders hope to foster a collective dynamic in the face of contemporary challenges, within a context of increasing polarization. The success of this initiative could influence the global political landscape in the coming months.
