After several days of heat and sunshine, the weather is changing dramatically this Thursday, June 4th. A weather system is moving across much of the country, bringing frequent rain, strong winds, and a significant drop in temperatures. This striking contrast will sometimes give the impression of early autumn, particularly in the northern half of the country.
The heaviest rainfall is expected across a wide area stretching from the Pyrenees to the Massif Central and the Alps. Heavy rain is possible in and around the mountains. Further north, showers will also be frequent throughout the day in cool, damp conditions.
The wind will strengthen particularly near the English Channel, where gusts of 70 to 80 km/h are expected. This northwesterly flow will contribute to a drop in temperatures, which will fall below seasonal averages in many areas.
While this gloomy weather may disappoint sun worshippers, it's excellent news for the environment. These rains will help relieve the soil after several often dry weeks, promote vegetation and crop growth, and temporarily improve air quality thanks to a decrease in pollen concentrations.
