Weather: Polar cold, frost and snow in the mountains for this Friday in mid-May

France will experience a particularly cold and unsettled day for this time of year on Friday. Rain, showers, sleet, wind, and even snow in the mountains are expected across much of the country. With an average national temperature of around 10°C, the weather will feel more like late March than mid-May.

This sudden drop in temperatures is linked to a surge of polar air, a rare occurrence at this time of year. White frosts, sometimes even severe frost, are expected at dawn from the Loire Valley to the Hauts-de-France and Grand Est regions. Locally, temperatures could fall below 0°C in sheltered areas. In the central-east, highs will not exceed 10 to 12°C between Besançon, Saint-Étienne, and Grenoble, levels close to record lows for mid-May.

Snow will also return from 1300 meters in the Pyrenees, the Massif Central, the Jura Mountains, and the northern Alps. Up to 50 cm is expected around 2000 meters altitude, making driving conditions difficult in the mountains. Elsewhere, the weather will remain very unsettled with frequent showers, while the mistral and tramontane winds will bring some sunny spells near the Mediterranean. In Corsica, gusts could exceed 100 km/h.
