In a move that redefines the user experience on the platform, Meta has announced the launch of a new tab called "Friends" (Friends Tab), which aims to highlight Facebook's primary purpose: to maintain a close connection between users and their loved ones – friends and family members.
Back to basics
This change comes after discussions last year between Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Meta, and his top collaborator Tom Alison, on the future of social media. In an interview, Alison indicated that Zuckerberg—who founded Facebook from his college dorm room before building it into a $1.5 trillion tech giant—wanted to recapture “the original Facebook spirit” (the “OG Facebook vibes”).
After years of adding new features, executives felt that Facebook's core uses had become diluted in a flood of content and secondary functions.
A symbolic but significant change
Meta announced a modest but significant update on Thursday: the "Friends" tab will replace the one that previously displayed friend requests and suggested contacts. It will become a feed of posts limited to friends and family—photos, videos, texts, birthdays, and new friend requests.
The tab is currently only available to users in the United States and Canada.
Tom Alison, now head of the Facebook app, explained:
« Having a dedicated space for what your friends are experiencing was the original magic of social media." We want to keep this at the heart of the Facebook experience. "It's something that shouldn't get lost in the digital turmoil."»
A shift in the social universe
This move marks a sharp departure from the recent evolution of social media, where platforms like TikTok have accustomed users to viewing content generated by strangers—influencers or creators. Meta itself has followed this path, increasingly relying on artificial intelligence to serve content on Facebook and Instagram, with the aim of maximizing time spent on the platforms.
The user experience has thus transformed into a passive viewing experience similar to that of television, centered on a small number of creators. But this evolution has not always been well received.
User reactions and the role of artificial intelligence
When Facebook launched in 2004, its mission was to allow students to stay connected with each other. It quickly became a way to keep up with friends and family.
But Zuckerberg's decision in 2022 to integrate content suggested by unknown people caused discontent among many users, some of whom felt the AI suggestions were out of step with the very essence of Facebook.
Despite criticism, and even though Zuckerberg later reduced the amount of suggested content, Meta hasn't abandoned this strategy. Content from influencers, brands, and creators now makes up the bulk of feeds on Facebook and Instagram. Meta claims that formats like Reels have helped increase time spent on the platform.
The “Friends” tab won’t replace everything.
Alison clarified that Meta has no plans to remove suggested content or make the "Friends" tab an alternative to the current AI-powered homepage.
However, further adjustments are planned in the coming months to restore Facebook's truly social dimension.
He concludes: "That's the very essence of Facebook."
