The holidays barely over, the 2026 winter sales are already upon us. Starting this Friday, January 2nd at 8 a.m., residents of four departments in eastern France (Meurthe-et-MoselleResidents of Meuse, Moselle, and Vosges will be able to raid the shelves, taking advantage of a head start due to their proximity to Luxembourg, where discounts also begin earlier. For the rest of mainland France, patience is required: the national sales kick off on Wednesday, January 7th, and run until Tuesday, February 3rd inclusive. Four weeks of bargain hunting, but with staggered dates in the overseas territories and e-commerce aligned with the mainland calendar. Amidst rising inflation and after a Black Friday that has already emptied some wallets, will these sales manage to revive consumer spending? The early start in the East is not a whim: Article L. 310-3 of the French Commercial Code authorizes adjustments for "strong seasonality" or cross-border competition. Vosges, Moselle, and neighboring departments are aligning their sales with Luxembourg to prevent customers from flocking to the Grand Duchy. As a result, from January 2nd to 29th, these departments will be the first to participate in the sales. For the others, the rule remains unchanged: the second Wednesday of January (moved to the first if the second falls after the 12th). 2026 respects the tradition: January 7th to February 3rd.
Overseas territories: a variable-geometry timetable
In the French overseas territories, the dates vary according to the climate and local customs. Martinique, French Guiana, and Mayotte follow mainland France (January 7–February 3). Guadeloupe: January 3–30. Saint Pierre and Miquelon January 21-February 17. Saint-Barthélemy and Saint-Martin even shift their sales to the summer season: May 2-29. Reunion Island, however, reverses the seasons: winter sales from September 5 to October 2, and summer sales from February 7 to March 6. As for e-commerce, there's no way around it: regardless of the company's headquarters, the national sales dates apply (January 7-February 3). Amazon, Shein, and Zalando will have to comply with the French regulations.
Are sales losing momentum?
With Black Friday, ongoing promotions, and private sales cannibalizing the event, traditional sales are losing their luster. The French, wary of inflation, often wait for genuine price drops, but retailers are hoping for a post-holiday surge. In Paris, Lyon, and Marseille, shop windows are already decked out in red. In eastern France, the lucky ones will be hitting the sales starting tomorrow. Everywhere else, January 7th will mark the real rush. But in a context where purchasing power remains strained, will these four weeks be enough to bring a smile back to the retailers' faces? One thing is certain: for bargain hunters, 2026 is starting with a bang… or with sales.
