Paris: 500 protesters for the abolition of prostitution ten years after the 2016 law

Around 500 people demonstrated in Paris on Sunday to demand the abolition of prostitution, ten years after the adoption of the law penalizing clients. The rally took place in front of the Panthéon, among other places, at the call of several associations working on this issue.

During this demonstration, women from various countries who had left prostitution spoke out to share their experiences. They defended the French model, which aims to punish clients while supporting those involved in leaving prostitution.

A call to strengthen and extend the law

Adopted in 2016, French legislation abolished the offense of soliciting and introduced fines for clients, which can reach €3,750 in case of repeat offenses. It also provides support services for people wishing to leave prostitution.

The organizations present emphasized the social dimension of the phenomenon, which they associate with situations of precariousness and vulnerability. They call for a strengthening of public policies and an extension of this model internationally.
