A New Caledonian politician, Jean Creugnet, was convicted by the Nouméa criminal court for sexual acts committed on board an airplane in 2023 against a flight attendant. He received a six-month suspended prison sentence and a five-year ban from holding public office.
The incident occurred during a flight between Nouméa and Singapore, while the elected official was on an official trip. According to several accounts, he allegedly behaved inappropriately toward a flight attendant while heavily intoxicated. The victim, who was not present at the hearing, remains deeply traumatized by the experience.
A defense weakened by the testimonies
The defendant denied any inappropriate intent, claiming memory loss due to alcohol consumption. This version was challenged by experts and witnesses, who described explicit and repeated actions. The court determined that these elements constituted a sexual assault.
The court decision also includes registration on the sex offenders register. The case has reignited the debate on the exemplary conduct expected of public officials, especially since the individual in question had not officially resigned from his position before the verdict.
