Rima Hassan: LFI files a complaint with Arcom after false information was broadcast on BFMTV

The leaders of La France Insoumise have announced they have filed a complaint with Arcom to challenge BFMTV's coverage of MEP Rima Hassan's detention. In a letter to the broadcasting regulator, which was made public, Manuel Bompard and Paul Vannier argue that the channel disseminated inaccurate information regarding the alleged presence of drugs among Rima Hassan's personal belongings.

According to the two left-wing leaders, this complaint concerns breaches they consider serious of the obligations governing pluralism, honesty, and independence of information. Manuel Bompard and Paul Vannier specifically accuse BFMTV of repeatedly broadcasting, notably through several on-air banners, information presented as fact when it is disputed.

The controversy centers in particular on the way the discovery of substances in Rima Hassan's belongings during her detention was presented. The prosecutor's office indicated that during the search, materials resembling CBD on one hand and 3-MMC, a synthetic drug, on the other, were found, and that the MEP was questioned about it.

The prosecutor's office had, however, specified that these elements were separate from the main case and would be the subject of a distinct procedure. It is precisely on this point that La France Insoumise bases part of its criticism, arguing that the on-air presentation may have created confusion about the exact nature of the events.

Rima Hassan denies any drug possession

For her part, Rima Hassan rejected all accusations of drug possession. The French-Palestinian MEP stated that she only consumed CBD, a legal substance, explaining that she used it for medicinal purposes.

This clarification was not enough to calm tensions between the political movement and the news channel. La France Insoumise believes that the information broadcast during Rima Hassan's detention damaged her image and contributed to establishing a disputed version of events in the public debate.

Another scandal in this case: The leaks reportedly came from the Ministry of Justice itself…

A hearing is scheduled for July 7 for advocating terrorism.

Alongside this controversy, Rima Hassan is due to stand trial on July 7th as part of an investigation for condoning terrorism. The proceedings concern a message posted on the social network X, in which she referenced the perpetrator of an attack against Israel.

This summons to court constitutes the main part of the case. The issue of the substances found in Rima Hassan's personal belongings was presented as separate from this case.

France Unbowed also denounces an unbalanced treatment of information

Beyond the content broadcast during the police custody, Manuel Bompard and Paul Vannier also criticize BFMTV for a broader imbalance in its coverage of the case. The two executives regret that the channel did not broadcast, the following Friday, the press conference during which Rima Hassan defended her position.

They also believe that no proportionate rebuttal was issued after the initial widespread dissemination of the disputed information. For La France Insoumise, this lack of a correction commensurate with the exposure given to the initial material raises an editorial issue.

A referral to Arcom against a backdrop of political and media tension

With this action, Manuel Bompard and Paul Vannier intend to obtain a review of Arcom's handling of this sequence. The referral to the regulator comes amidst a climate of high tension surrounding the Rima Hassan case, in the legal, political, and media spheres.

The challenge for La France Insoumise is now to have it acknowledged that BFMTV's coverage has gone beyond simple news reporting and, according to the movement, has entered into the repeated dissemination of questionable information. Meanwhile, the legal case against Rima Hassan will continue, with a hearing expected on July 7.
