The judicial investigation into Jean-Luc Mélenchon's campaign finances during the 2017 presidential election is now complete. Opened in 2018 following reports from the National Commission for Campaign Accounts and Tracfin, the investigation led to several years of inquiries and four indictments.
At the heart of the case is the communications company Mediascop, headed by Sophia Chikirou, which the courts suspect of having overbilled for certain services provided during the presidential campaign. Since these expenses were partially reimbursed by the state, investigators have explored the possibility of fraud against public finances.
Four indictments and a decision awaited
Among those charged are Sophia Chikirou and MP Bastien Lachaud. The investigations also targeted the association L'Ère du peuple and the campaign's financial agent. The raids carried out in October 2018 at the headquarters of La France insoumise and at the homes of several of the movement's leaders sparked a major political controversy.
With the investigation now closed, the public prosecutor's office must submit its recommendations before the investigating judge decides whether to refer the case to a criminal court. For its part, La France Insoumise maintains that no trial should take place, emphasizing that Jean-Luc Mélenchon and Manuel Bompard have never been formally charged in this case and contesting the accusations of overbilling.
