In Arcachon, the mayor, Yves Foulon of the Republicans party, finds himself at the center of a controversy after a video surfaced showing him hurling insults and threats at his Green Party opponent, Vital Baude. The scene, filmed without his knowledge outside a polling station during the first round of municipal elections, has led to an investigation for "threats," "non-public insult," and "violence."
In this now-viral video, the elected official makes particularly aggressive remarks toward his rival, amidst tensions stemming from a dispute over a real estate project. Vital Baude, who has filed a complaint, denounced the words as "shocking" and stated that he acted to expose the seriousness of the situation.
The mayor apologizes after the controversy
Re-elected in the first round with over 66% of the vote, Yves Foulon acknowledged "inappropriate behavior" and offered a public apology. He maintains, however, that he was provoked and alleges a "set-up," while expressing regret for his remarks.
The incident sparked numerous political reactions. Several officials, particularly on the left, condemned the remarks as "unacceptable," and some called for the mayor's resignation. The Republican party leadership also denounced the statements and demanded an explanation from the elected official.
