Sony raises the price of the PS5 again: bad news for gamers

Sony officially announced on Friday another price increase for several PlayStation products. The measure affects the standard PS5, the PS5 Digital Edition, the PS5 Pro, and the PlayStation Portal, with the increase taking effect on April 2nd. In its announcement, the company explained this decision by the "persistent pressures on the global economy."

In Europe, the new recommended prices are €649,99 for the PS5, €599,99 for the PS5 Digital Edition and €899,99 for the PS5 Pro. The PlayStation Portal also sees a price increase, rising to €249,99. Sony is also applying this price hike in the UK, the US, and Japan, with prices tailored to each market.

For European gamers, this is a particularly bitter pill to swallow given that the console had already undergone price adjustments previously. In April 2025, Sony had already raised the price of the PS5 Digital Edition in Europe and the UK, citing at the time a “difficult economic environment”, marked by high inflation and volatile exchange rates.

A trend contrary to usual practices

This latest price increase confirms an unusual trend in the video game industry: instead of decreasing as the console ages, the price of the hardware continues to rise. This is even the second price hike in less than a year in some markets, following an increase already implemented in the United States in August 2025. At that time, Sony had raised the US prices of the PS5 to $549,99, $499,99, and $749,99 depending on the model, before the new increase announced on March 27.

For Sony, the stated objective is to preserve its ability to offer products and experiences "High quality." For consumers, the message has been much less well received: the PS5 is becoming more expensive mid-generation, whereas many were expecting more aggressive bundles or sustained discounts. This price increase could therefore deter some purchases, especially in a market where hardware pricing has already become a sensitive issue.

In short, for France/Europe:

PS5: €649,99 PS5 Digital Edition: €599,99 PS5 Pro: €899,99 PlayStation Portal: €249,99 The price increase will be effective from April 2nd.
