The French video game "Clair Obscur: Expedition 33," developed by Montpellier-based studio Sandfall Interactive, was named Game of the Year at the BAFTA Games Awards in London. This accolade confirms the international success of this debut title, which has already received several awards since its release in April 2025.
The game notably won "Game of the Year" at the Game Awards in Los Angeles in December, a first for a French production, before also winning at the Pégases Awards in Paris in March. At the London ceremony, it also received the award for "Best Debut Game," while actress Jennifer English was recognized for her performance.
A worldwide critical and commercial success
A role-playing game set in a post-apocalyptic world inspired by the Belle Époque, "Clair Obscur: Expedition 33" follows a group of characters confronted by a supernatural entity threatening their city. Its universe and gameplay, influenced in particular by the Final Fantasy saga, have captivated a wide audience.
With over 5 million copies sold and a soundtrack widely distributed online, the game has become a global phenomenon. Developed by a team of around thirty people on a budget of less than 10 million euros, it illustrates the ability of independent productions to compete with the major studios in the industry.
