Microsoft has announced a new global price increase for its Xbox Series X and Series S consoles, effective since August 1st, the third increase applied by the manufacturer in just over thirteen months.
Up to $150 more depending on the model
Models equipped with 512GB of storage will see a price increase of $100, while the 1TB versions will see a $150 increase. Microsoft is also taking this opportunity to confirm the discontinuation of its 2TB model, deemed too expensive to maintain in the current market. In the United States, the entry-level Xbox Series S now costs $500, the same price as the Xbox Series X at its launch in 2020.
The manufacturer justifies this decision by the explosion in the cost of components, in particular storage and memory, the prices of which have reportedly increased more than 2,5 times in a few months, with a further doubling feared by autumn 2027 due to a global shortage of semiconductors.
An entire sector affected by the components crisis
This increase is part of a broader trend affecting the entire video game industry: Sony had already raised the price of the PlayStation 5 in Europe in the spring, now selling for 649,99 euros for the standard model and 899,99 euros for the Pro version, while Nintendo warned that the Switch 2 would increase to 499,99 euros on September 1st.
To mitigate the impact of this increase on gamers, Microsoft indicates that it is implementing several measures designed to make its consoles more accessible, including interest-free installment payment solutions available through Microsoft Stores.
