Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced: the return of the pirate Edward Kenway announced for July 9th

It was the worst-kept secret in French video games. Ubisoft officially announced on Thursday, April 23rd, the release of Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced, a modernized version of the 2013 pirate classic, for July 9th, 2026 on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC (Steam, Epic Games Store, and Ubisoft Store). This is the first remake of a game in the Assassin's Creed saga, a franchise that has sold over 230 million copies since its creation in 2007 and includes around fifteen main installments. The project was entrusted to Ubisoft Singapore, the studio already responsible for the naval combat in the original game, supported by around fifteen other studios within the group.

Edward Kenway returns to a completely reworked Caribbean

The game returns to the world of the Golden Age of Piracy and its central hero, Edward Kenway, the Welsh adventurer and grandfather of Connor Kenway (hero of Assassin's Creed III). An atypical character in the saga, Edward is originally neither an Assassin nor a Templar: it is by stealing the costume of a Brotherhood member to collect a bounty that he finds himself embroiled in the conflict and launched on the trail of the Observatory, a mythical place supposedly capable of monitoring anyone on Earth. The original storyline is preserved, but the entire game has been rebuilt using the latest version of the Anvil engine. The first images revealed show significantly improved graphics: a more vibrant and populated world, optimized textures, and seamless transitions. The gameplay has also been enhanced, with smoother combat, reworked parkour and stealth mechanics, and expanded naval mechanics, in keeping with recent additions to the franchise. New additions to the cast include Lucy Baldwin, the Padre, and Dead Man Smith, each with their own narrative quests. Edward's iconic ship, the Jackdaw, is back, and this time can accommodate a cat or monkey as a pet. However, Ubisoft has confirmed the absence of a multiplayer mode. Musically, the original soundtrack returns, complemented by a reimagined composition from Woodkid, who also composed the soundtrack for Death Stranding 2, which will be revealed later this year.

A strategic remake for Ubisoft, which is in the midst of rebuilding.

The release of Black Flag Resynced comes at a delicate time for the French publisher, which announced in January a major reorganization accompanied by delays and cancellations, including the halting of the Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time remake. After mixed results for Shadows and Mirage, Ubisoft has chosen to rely on a title highly praised by its community to regain financial stability. The latest installment, Assassin's Creed Shadows, launched in March 2025, had, however, exceeded the publisher's expectations. Furthermore, a series adaptation for Netflix is currently in development, with a plot set in ancient Rome.
