The US State Department approved the potential sale of five MH-60R Seahawk helicopters to New Zealand in late May, for an estimated $1,5 billion. This transaction represents one of the largest military contracts ever signed by Wellington. The aircraft, manufactured by Lockheed Martin, are specifically designed for anti-submarine warfare and maritime surveillance missions. The New Zealand government is thus seeking to modernize its naval capabilities amidst a tense geopolitical context in the Indo-Pacific region.
A comprehensive American strategy
This acquisition is part of a broader US strategy to strengthen military partnerships with its allies. Washington has been forging numerous arms deals in recent years, as evidenced by the record $142 billion contract signed with Saudi Arabia in May 2025, and the ten-year, $20 billion agreement concluded in March 2026 with the startup Anduril Industries to supply autonomous drones and advanced military software to the US military. These transactions illustrate Washington's desire to consolidate its network of alliances while simultaneously boosting its domestic defense industry.
For New Zealand, this contract represents a major investment in its armed forces. The MH-60R helicopters will replace an aging fleet and provide enhanced operational capabilities for monitoring the vast maritime areas under New Zealand jurisdiction. Delivery of the aircraft is expected to take place over several years, allowing time to train crews and adapt the necessary technical infrastructure for their deployment.
