The European Union reaffirmed on Wednesday its full support for Greenland and Denmark, rejecting any challenge to their sovereignty and any violation of international law. The President of the European Council, António Costainsisted that the future of Greenland could not be decided without the agreement of its population and the Danish authorities.

Speaking at a speech marking the start of Cyprus's rotating EU presidency, Costa declared that "Greenland belongs to its people" and that any decision concerning it must involve both Greenland and Denmark. He emphasized that the European Union would stand by both entities "if needed," in the name of European solidarity.

These statements come as the American president Donald Trump The idea of a US takeover of Greenland has recently been revived. Washington justifies this interest by the island's strategic importance to American defense, while accusing Denmark of not providing sufficient protection.

António Costa placed this position in a broader context, arguing that the rules-based international order is increasingly being challenged. According to him, the European Union must be firm and consistent in the face of these challenges, regardless of the context.

He thus affirmed that the EU could not accept violations of international law, "whether in Cyprus, Latin America, Greenland, Ukraine or Gaza", calling on member states to actively defend multilateralism and respect for international rules.

As Cyprus takes the helm of the Council of the European Union for six months, the Greenland issue appears as a new test for European unity in the face of growing geopolitical pressures and the ambitions of major powers.
