The President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, announced Wednesday before the European Parliament in Strasbourg that she would propose new measures targeting Israel, in response to the continued military offensive in Gaza and the recent Israeli strike in Qatar.

According to her, the Commission will propose to sanction several Israeli ministers deemed "extremists", as well as to suspend certain trade arrangements previously concluded with the Hebrew state.

The announcements come as diplomatic tensions mount following the Israeli attack on Hamas leaders in Doha, an operation that drew condemnation from several Arab capitals and concern from international mediators.

In Israel, Foreign Minister Gideon Saar called Brussels' statements "regrettable," saying they only weakened ties between the European Union and Israel at a critical time.

The European initiative, which will have to be debated by member states, could mark a turning point in bilateral relations. Until now, the EU had favored diplomatic pressure and calls for restraint, while maintaining its trade agreements with Israel.

The prospect of European sanctions adds a new dimension to international tensions, at a time when mediation efforts for a ceasefire in Gaza appear increasingly fragile.
