The Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney will make an official visit to China Next week, a spokesperson for his office indicated Wednesday. This trip will mark the first visit by a Canadian head of government to Beijing in several years, amid long-standing strained bilateral relations.

According to the same source, the visit aims to revive political and economic dialogue between Ottawa and Beijing. Discussions are expected to focus on trade, energy, agriculture, and international issues, as Canada seeks to diversify its economic partnerships beyond its main ally, the United States.

Mark Carney must notably meet with top Chinese leaders, including the president Xi Jinpingin order to examine ways to stabilize and, if possible, improve a relationship marked by several disputes in recent years. The two countries maintain significant trade, but this has been affected by political tensions and mutual retaliatory measures.

Relations between Canada and China deteriorated sharply in the late 2010s, particularly after the arrest in Canada of an executive of a Chinese technology company, followed by the detention of Canadian citizens in China. Since then, trade disputes, especially in the agricultural and industrial sectors, have continued to fuel tensions.

The Prime Minister's trip is being closely watched by Canadian business and agricultural communities, who are hoping for improved access to the Chinese market and a reduction in trade barriers. Ottawa has not yet indicated, however, whether any concrete agreements will be announced following the visit.

This diplomatic initiative is part of a broader context in which several Western countries are trying to reassess their relations with Beijing, seeking to reconcile economic cooperation with the management of persistent strategic disagreements.
