Algerian Interior Minister Saïd Sayoud is expected in Paris this Monday for a working visit aimed at continuing the rapprochement initiated in recent months between France and Algeria after a long period of diplomatic tensions.
Welcomed at Roissy airport by his French counterpart Laurent Nuñez, the Algerian minister will then participate in a series of talks and meetings at the Ministry of the Interior, Place Beauvau. This meeting follows on from Laurent Nuñez's trip to Algiers last February, considered a first step towards normalizing relations between the two countries.
Discussions will focus on security cooperation, the fight against organized crime, migration issues, and civil protection. Several officials from French and Algerian administrations are also expected to participate in the technical exchanges scheduled throughout the day.
A new step in the diplomatic thaw
This visit comes in a context of progressive improvement in Franco-Algerian relations. Emmanuel Macron recently reaffirmed its willingness to restore an "effective and respectful" dialogue with Algiers, respecting the interests of each country.
Relations between Paris and Algiers deteriorated sharply from the summer of 2024 onwards following France's official support for Morocco's autonomy plan for Western Sahara. This decision led Algeria to recall its ambassador and triggered several months of diplomatic tensions.
Enhanced cooperation between Paris and Algiers
The rapprochement has accelerated in recent months with several ministerial exchanges. Following Laurent Nuñez's visit to Algiers in February, the French Minister of Justice, Gérald Darmanin, also visited Algeria in mid-May to revitalize judicial cooperation between the two countries.
The working day between Laurent Nuñez and Saïd Sayoud is scheduled to conclude with an official dinner. French authorities hope this meeting will help solidify the resumption of bilateral dialogue and deepen cooperation on several sensitive issues, including the fight against criminal networks and the management of migration flows.
