Since 2025, the RAM market has undergone a true price revolution. While some DDR5 kits were still available at reasonable prices just a few months ago, they now reach levels that sometimes seem absurd. Some modules now cost more than a complete PC or a game console. This meteoric rise is a game-changer, both for consumers and manufacturers.

For example, a 32GB DDR5-5600 kit, which until early 2025 sold for around $90, now frequently exceeds $500. High-end 64GB kits sell for up to $800, more than the price of a new console.

These examples illustrate the general trend: DDR5 module prices have jumped dramatically in a few months, reaching levels not seen in the consumer market for years.

Why this surge? Supply under strain in the face of massive demand

This price increase is due to several converging factors. Global demand for memory is exploding, primarily because of intensive use cases related to artificial intelligence, data centers, and servers, which require massive amounts of high-performance DRAM. Manufacturers have therefore prioritized these high-margin markets, reducing memory availability for the general public.

At the same time, production costs have increased: materials, energy, process complexity, and logistics all weigh heavily on the final price. Component shortages and strain on supply chains have exacerbated this surge. As a result, even so-called "consumer" DDR5 kits are seeing their prices skyrocket, and the rock-bottom price of a year ago now seems a distant memory.

RAM more expensive than ever

For the user, the difference is tangible. Building a PC or upgrading memory now requires a significantly larger budget. A 32GB kit, which has become the standard for a general-purpose or gaming PC, now costs almost twice as much as it did a year ago. High-end configurations or large-capacity kits (64GB) are now comparable in price to a console or a complete PC.

This situation is a game-changer for gaming enthusiasts, content creators, and professionals: RAM is no longer a "small addition," but a central item in the budget. For modest setups, the scarcity of affordable kits complicates the choices, while for demanding configurations, the cost of RAM can represent up to a third of the total budget.

What impact will this have on mobile phones, consoles, and computers?

The soaring price of RAM isn't limited to PCs. Mobile phones, especially high-end models with 12 to 16 GB of LPDDR5/LPDDR5X RAM, could see their production costs rise, which is likely to be passed on to the retail price. Mid-range and high-end smartphones could therefore become more expensive, or slightly reduce the amount of RAM to remain competitive.

For game consoles, RAM is also a key factor. A modern console like the PS5 comes with 16 GB of RAM, and rising prices for DDR5/DDR5X components could push manufacturers to increase the price of new models or limit the RAM capacity in future generations. Gamers could end up with less RAM or higher prices for new machines.

In the case of computers, the impact is immediate and visible. DDR5 kits of 32 GB or more now represent a much larger portion of the budget, making upgrades more expensive and potentially delaying purchases or upgrades for individuals. Laptop and desktop manufacturers must choose between increasing the price of devices or limiting the amount of RAM included, which could affect performance and the user experience.

A price increase that will last

This surge is unfortunately not just a passing peak. Manufacturers' priority is now the massive memory needs of AI and data centers, and consumer memory remains limited. Even with new production capacity, manufacturing and deployment cycles are long, suggesting high prices for several years. Analysts anticipate a period of strain that could last until 2027-2028, before a possible return to more affordable levels.
