However, behind these viral clips, in many cases, are characters entirely generated by artificial intelligence.

These posts are usually accompanied by links to online stores offering bags, decorative items, or handcrafted creations. The tactic relies on the emotions and compassion of internet users to encourage purchases. Several experts denounce this exploitation of the image of disability for commercial purposes.

Associations denounce stereotypes and misleading practices

The Down Syndrome International organization believes that this content reinforces persistent stereotypes about people with Down syndrome. According to its officials, these videos perpetuate a paternalistic view of disability by systematically presenting those concerned as victims eliciting public pity.

The associations also point out that this trend penalizes genuine creators and entrepreneurs with Down syndrome, whose authentic work is lost amidst artificial content designed to generate traffic and sales. Several posts have even been removed in recent months following complaints to the platforms.

Content that is easy to produce, but difficult to control

Artificial intelligence specialists are warning about how easily these videos can be created. Thanks to image and video generation tools, it now only takes a few minutes to produce believable characters, accompanied by emotional storylines capable of generating user engagement.

Despite the rules implemented by major platforms against misleading content, many accounts continue to distribute this type of video. Experts believe that the proliferation of these practices illustrates the growing difficulties social networks face in detecting and moderating increasingly realistic artificial intelligence-generated content.
