Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Thursday evening that the ten-day ceasefire between Israel and Lebanon opened the way to a possible "historic peace" between the two countries, while setting firm conditions, including the disarmament of Hezbollah.
This agreement, announced by the American president Donald TrumpThe truce, which is to take effect at 23 p.m. Paris time, includes the Lebanese Shiite movement Hezbollah. According to Washington, Israeli and Lebanese leaders agreed on this temporary truce, intended to ease tensions at the border.
Benjamin Netanyahu, however, emphasized Israel's demands for a lasting agreement. He outlined "two fundamental conditions": first, the disarmament of Hezbollah, and second, the establishment of a solid peace based on a balance of power favorable to Israel. He also specified that the Israeli army would maintain its presence in southern Lebanon, in a border strip approximately ten kilometers wide.
The Israeli prime minister stated that he had rejected Hezbollah's demands for a complete withdrawal of Israeli forces to the international border and a ceasefire based on the principle of "calm for calm." He emphasized that these conditions were not included in the current agreement.
In this context, Donald Trump announced that a meeting at the White House between Benjamin Netanyahu and Lebanese President Joseph Aoun should take place in the coming days. This diplomatic initiative aims to transform the truce into a broader agreement, capable of stabilizing the situation between the two countries in the long term.
