The Senate this week adopted a bill aimed at easing the regulations imposed on local authorities. This technical text, comprising nearly forty articles, constitutes the legislative component of a promise made by the government last September: a major decentralization initiative. Submitted to the senators since Tuesday, the bill responds to a strong demand from local elected officials who have long been calling for administrative simplification.
A text enriched by the Senate
The text is based on consultations conducted locally and on several reports produced by the Senate in recent years. During its review in committee, senators expanded the initial draft, particularly on urban planning and land-use issues. The government, led by Sébastien Lecornu, thus intends to honor a commitment made several months ago to local authorities, who are facing an accumulation of regulations deemed restrictive.
This initiative aims to give elected officials more flexibility in the day-to-day management of their responsibilities. The bill must now continue its parliamentary journey in the National Assembly before final adoption. Local authorities hope that these measures will allow them to become more efficient and autonomous in implementing their public policies.
