The chairman of the Office for Budget Responsibility (OBR), Richard Hughes, announced his resignation on Monday, just days after a full report from the agency was made public before Chancellor of the Exchequer Rachel Reeves officially presented the autumn budget. This leak, deemed embarrassing by both the government and the OBR, triggered a wave of criticism and highlighted significant internal flaws.

The report, mistakenly published before last week's Budget Speech, contained the full fiscal projections, as well as key policy elements that Reeves was due to present to Parliament. Its early release has fueled a debate about data security and the transparency of budgetary processes in the UK.

In a statement, the OBR attributed the incident to "weaknesses in the IT system and management," acknowledging shortcomings in the agency's internal operations. While Richard Hughes accepted responsibility for the error, the OBR assured that it was working to implement corrective measures to prevent any recurrence.

The leak comes as Rachel Reeves, the first woman to hold the position of Chancellor of the Exchequer, seeks to bolster market confidence and redefine the country's economic strategy. Hughes's resignation adds a sensitive political dimension to the matter, at a time when the government is relying on stability and fiscal discipline to support its economic program.
