US President Donald Trump , who recently positioned himself as a mediator in the conflicts in Ukraine and Gaza, now seems to be adopting a more reserved stance on the international stage to focus more on domestic issues.

According to Pentagon officials, a strong signal was sent to European diplomats in late August: Washington is considering reducing some of its security assistance to Latvia, Lithuania, and Estonia, three Baltic NATO members and neighbors of Russia. This prospect has raised serious concerns among European allies, who fear a weakening of Western deterrence against Moscow.

The same diplomats, initially encouraged by Trump's involvement in peace talks on Ukraine and his stance on Gaza, now express concern about this American refocusing. The president's measured attitude toward recent Russian air incursions, which crossed the airspace of several European countries, reinforces their doubts about the solidity of the American commitment to the Atlantic Alliance.

This shift underscores recurring tensions between the White House's domestic priorities and the expectations of its European partners, as the war in Ukraine continues and tensions in the Middle East remain volatile. For Washington's allies, uncertainty over the continued US commitment remains a major concern.
