May 1st: MPs accelerate the examination of the text on employee work

Members of Parliament on Friday adopted a motion to reject a proposed labor law on May 1st, initiated by the president's camp. This maneuver bypasses plenary debate and sends the text directly to a joint committee, thus expediting its adoption.

The scheme should allow for rapid implementation, potentially as early as May 1, 2026. The text aims to authorize certain employees, particularly in local shops and cultural establishments, to work on this public holiday, on a voluntary basis and with increased pay.

A procedure denounced by the opposition and the unions.

The method has drawn sharp criticism from the left, which accuses the majority of circumventing parliamentary debate. Several groups have announced their intention to refer the matter to the Constitutional Council once the law is definitively adopted.

Trade unions also opposed the proposal, denouncing it as an attack on the symbolic and public holiday nature of May 1st. The text, however, excludes certain sectors such as large retailers and specifies that refusing to work cannot be penalized.
