In a breakthrough that could revolutionize mobile photography, a new patent filed by Samsung reveals that the South Korean brand plans to integrate modular, removable, and interchangeable cameras into its future smartphones.
This patent, recently published by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), describes a novel system for adding replaceable external lenses, reminiscent of the operation of professional cameras, but in a pocket-sized format, according to a report from Android Headlines.
The patent is based on four key elements:
the external casing of the phone,
a detachable lens module,
an image sensor,
and a mechanical motor capable of moving the lens or sensor,
which would offer advanced features such as optical zoom or shooting angle control.
The system would include a smart mechanism that allows the phone to automatically identify the type of lens connected, either by built-in magnet or via RFID (radio frequency identification) technology.
According to the patent, these lenses may require a specific hood or accessory to ensure their compatibility with Samsung devices.
Although the brand has not yet officially announced a launch date, Samsung's entry into the modular camera market seems likely, especially since some competitors like Vivo have already launched an external lens for their flagship X200 Ultra model.
However, as with many patented innovations, there is no guarantee that this concept will see the light of day, and it may remain at the prototype stage.
Despite this, the outlook remains credible, particularly in a context where innovation is accelerating in the smartphone sector and where demand for professional mobile photography tools is constantly growing.
