Starting this Friday, June 20, 2025, all new smartphones and tablets sold in the European Union will be required to display a new energy label. This system, already well-known for refrigerators and televisions, aims to provide consumers with clear information on the energy performance of appliances, as well as their durability.
A label to better guide buyers
The energy label, which applies only to new devices, assigns a rating from A to G based on power consumption. It is now mandatory for mobile phones and tablets. The goal is to allow consumers to compare models based on their energy efficiency and guide their choices toward the most energy-efficient products. However, some types of smartphones are still exempt from this regulation, such as foldable models and those designed for high-security communications.
Criteria extended to reparability and robustness
Beyond energy consumption alone, this new label incorporates criteria specific to portable devices. It includes product repairability, battery life, protection against dust and water, and shock resistance in the event of a fall. This data is intended to meet the growing expectations of users concerned about the durability of their equipment and limit the effects of planned obsolescence. With this new labeling, European authorities intend to promote more responsible consumption while encouraging manufacturers to design more robust, repairable, and energy-efficient devices.
