The first secretary of the Socialist Party, Olivier Faure, has not ruled out filing a motion of no confidence against the government on labor issues on May 1st. He is making this possibility conditional on respect for social dialogue regarding the proposed legislation currently under consideration.
This text aims to expand the possibilities of working on this public holiday, and could be examined quickly in a joint committee in order to come into force as early as 2026. Olivier Faure believes however that this subject, which he considers symbolic, must be the subject of in-depth discussions with the social partners.
Political pressure from the left
Several left-wing groups have raised the possibility of a motion of no confidence if their demands are not met. The La France Insoumise party and the Communists have already indicated their intention to join them, although they do not have enough members of parliament on their own to initiate it.
The government, for its part, has stated its intention to prioritize dialogue, including plans for discussions with unions. The outcome of these discussions could be crucial for the continuation of the legislative process and the potential mobilization of the parliamentary opposition.
