The National Rally mayor of Perpignan, Louis Aliot, was elected president of the Perpignan Méditerranée Métropole urban community on Saturday, thus becoming head of the largest inter-municipal body governed by the National Rally. He obtained a large majority in the first round, with 60 out of 79 votes cast.
In his speech, he pledged to implement "shared governance" and ruled out any intention of imposing dominance on the central city. He also emphasized the need to respect the representation of the various municipalities within decision-making bodies.
An election facilitated by local alliances
This election comes after the withdrawal of the outgoing president, Robert Vila, who did not wish to run again. He cited a convergence of views between his supporters and those of Louis Aliot, emphasizing the best interests of the region.
Having already run unsuccessfully in 2020, Louis Aliot benefited this time from a more favorable context, notably thanks to a strategy of appeasement towards local right-wing elected officials. His only opponent, the communist mayor of Cabestany, failed to garner enough votes against him.
